Frequently Asked Questions

Most frequent questions and answers...

Why do you need double glazing here in Australia?

Up to 80% of your heating and cooling generated in your home is lost through standard windows and doors. By installing affordable uPVC double glazing from NICHE Double Glazing, you can reduce this loss by two thirds. A common misconception is that double glazing insulation is only needed to assist with heat loss. However, it is equally, or even more, beneficial in assisting with the loss of cooling of your home as cooling costs are far greater than heating costs.

What is laminated glass and PVB?

Our laminated glass is a type of safety glass that holds together when shattered. In the event of breaking, it is held in place by an interlayer, typically of polyvinyl butyral (PVB), between its two or more layers of glass. Polyvinyl butyral (or PVB) is a resin used for applications that require strong binding, optical clarity, adhesion to many surfaces, toughness and flexibility. This also helps to filter out harmful UV by up 98%.

What is uPVC?

‘unplasticised’ PVC or Polyvinyl Chloride also known as uPVC, is used to build our high-quality, durable and affordable double glazed windows and doors. Titanium dioxide, a very important raw material ingredient in our uPVC profiles is used to protect the surface of the window against UV rays.

Why is Argon gas used in IGUs?

Argon gas is used within our IGUs to improve thermal performance. Argon is non-toxic, non-reactive and has a thermal conductivity approximately 30% lower than air.

What is U-Value?

It is the rate of heat transfer measured in watts per square meter (W/m2K). When comparing this value, assess this rating of the complete window or door assembly(frame & glass unit) rather than the glass unit in isolation.

What is an IGU?

Our insulating glass unit(IGU) consists of two panes of glass separated by a Super Spacer (silicone rubber impregnated with desiccant) and sealed together at the edge. The insulating airspace is filled with a noble gas argon. The overall size of our IGU is 28mm.

What is a BAL?

A BAL (Bushfire Attack Level) is a means of measuring a building’s potential exposure to ember attack, radiant heat and direct flame contact, in a bushfire event. It is a basis for establishing the requirements for construction to improve the protection of building elements from attack by bushfire.
